Bonnie Schneider
After earning the Bachelor of Music (Boston University in 1963) and having a look at broad-based education as a professor (Brown University 1971-1975) I am currently fully committed to an integrated approach to learning that includes the study of arts alongside other disciplines. It is no surprise coming from an ethnomusicologist, who earned a MA in 1967 as well as earned a Ph.D. in the field of ethnomusicology from UCLA. The program I am in, ethnomusicology, that was started with UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is ideally located in a music department in a College of Letters and Science. I love exploring my interests in a variety of areas and seeing the big image. I am very passionate about instructing both students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors) who I've written three textbooks-Music in India: the Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture) and graduate students. There are times when I pursue primarily professorial activities in addition to periods of administrative responsibilities to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair of all the Deans at the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chair of the Group in Asian Studies, since 1999, and is now the as Chair of the Department of Music again).
